The great gull hovered in the lee of the ship, fishing on a wild windy day. He soared in every direction, banking, turning and swooping without flapping his wings. Sometimes he dissappeared in the trough of a wave, then seconds later, he was higher than the ship. He coasted next to the bridge, and looked over as if to say, “Slow pokes!” My regal friend had a six-foot wing span, but some albatross have a 12-foot wing span. This one was a youngster.
– Gerry Roach - from Eight Summits Omnibus – Two: Kosciusko
Gerry’s Eight Summits Omnibus is a celebration of an around-the-world tour of summits, life and love. The stories capture climbs and other adventures centered on Gerry’s quest to climb Earth’s seven continent summits. He climbed North America’s Mount McKinley in 1963, Australia’s Kosciusko in 1968, Africa’s Kilimanjaro in 1973, South America’s Aconcagua in 1975, Asia’s Everest in 1983, Europe’s Elbrus in 1985 and Antarctica’s Vinson in December 1985. In 1994, he went on to climb Earth’s eighth summit, Carstenz Pyramid in New Guinea. Kosciusko was renamed Kosciuszko in 1997.
Gerry offers, “I hope that my stories can inspire future seven summiters. My climbs occurred in four different decades and my Omnibus paints a picture of a changing world. In today’s hurry-up society, gratification is assumed and we expect it to come instantly. If you find the prospect of climbing Earth’s eight summits daunting, my Omnibus can help. There was innocence in my early climbs that we can enjoy remembering. My quest for Earth’s eight summits took 31 years.
Eight Summits Omnibus – Two: Kosciusko covers a trip around the world I took in late 1968 and early 1969. I climbed Australia’s Kosciusko en route. On the journey, I also climbed peaks in Hawaii, New Zealand, Antarctica and South Africa. This trip fueled my desire for grander adventures. Let your adventure begin!”
