Soaring up from the Boulder foothills, the Flatirons are famous for moderate climbing.
They are a great training ground for more difficult climbing, and even more important, climbing in the Flatirons is simply fun.
Join Gerry as he explores this striking array of sandstone slabs that host a challenging universe of
clefts, corners, cracks, chimneys, caves, overhangs, faces, grottos, alcoves, notches, ridges, and summits.
There are 238 routes on 116 rocks, and most of them are rated 5.6 or easier.
In Flatiron Classics, Gerry unlocks the details of timeless rock climbs such as
Baker’s Way, Atalanta, Hubris, the Spy, Freeway, Dodge Block, and the transcendent Lark Ascending. |
Gerry completely updated the 2nd edition of Flatiron Classics to include seasonal conservation closures
and also reevaluated route difficulty. Gerry has designated fifty-one of the routes as “Classics”
and, for those who are on a climbing vacation to Boulder, he has listed the Top Ten routes.
As always, Gerry has included hundreds of Variations and Extra Credits.
The 272-page 2nd edition has 82 heavily annotated black and white photographs and a detailed index.
Both the 1st and 2nd editions have rounded corners. |

First published by Fulcrum in 1987, this 4 x 6 inch, 336-page, soft-cover classic is perfect for your pocket.
The tricky part is finding a copy of the 1st edition, since it is long out of print. The 1st edition describes
over 250 flatiron routes. Eighty-eight percent of them are rated Class 5.6
or easier. The hardest route described is rated Class 5.8.
Fifty-two of the routes are designated *Classic.* In addition
to the climbing routes, the guide describes 15 trailheads, 30 trails, 11 off-trail
hiking routes, 4 caves and several arches. Gerry also provides Variations and Extra
Credits for many of the routes. The City of Boulder has rerouted some of the
approach trails and changed many regulations since Gerry wrote the 1st edition of Flatiron Classics,
so some of that information is out of date. However, the route descriptions on the rocks are still accurate. |
The 1st edition has become quite rare. The copies that we have for sale are in very fine condition. |
