Tappan Mountain – 8,954 feet

This small peak is just a mile north of the Tarryall Road, and provides a short hike for all seasons. The Hayman Fire burned the trees on much of Tappan Mountain in July 2002. The Hayman Fire scorched 138,000 acres just east of the Lost Creek Wilderness, and was the largest fire in Colorado history. Tappan Mountain is near the southwestern extent of the fire, and a hike here can allow you to sample the fire zone without delving too deep into the devastaion.

You can see the Platte Springs Road leading to the Tappan Trailhead, which is where the road enters the trees

South Slopes

– 2.0 miles RT, 634 feet net & total, Class 1

This short stroll takes you to a pastoral summit. Start at the Tappan Trailhead, go 200 yards north-northeast along FS 210 and turn north (left) onto an old, closed road. Follow this old road 0.7 mile north across rolling terrain, passing through some burned trees. When the road turns west, leave it and hike 0.2 mile north up a grassy hill to Tappan’s summit.
