While I frantically pulled my boots on, Charlie kept screaming, “Hurry! Tent’s taking off! I can’t hold much longer!” All his equipment was in the Kodiak, and its loss would be a major disaster. As Charlie slowly lost his grip on the tent cum sail, he gave ground down the glacier. I bolted out of the Trailridge, ran after him, and just in time, did a painful belly flop onto the Kodiak.

In a knee-barking grounding, the two of us clung to the wildly flapping nylon. Now what? Before I could make any rational assessment, Charlie howled through the wind, “This wasn’t in the brochure!”

Seizing the moment, I bellowed back, “You should have read the fine print instead of just looking at the pictures!”
