I stood alone on top of Flatiron Arch holding my lifeline aloft. At the time, it did not occur to me that I was the first person to ever stand there.
I had been silent for too long. PJ hollered up, “Roach! Speak!”
“Off belay, but OSOD!”
“Why?”
“Loose rock everywhere. You need to get out of the way so I can knock them off.”
“How far?”
“Put the rope in the crack, and get the hell out of there. Go down around the corner. Hurry!”
“Moving!”
While the boys scurried down, I stood motionless in my minefield. There were dozens of rocks here, and any one of them could kill. When the sounds of scurrying stopped, I heard a more distant, “Is this far enough?”
I could not see the kids, but knowing that what was about to occur would be near biblical, I hollered, “No! Get completely around the corner. Big rocks coming! Go, go, go!”
