I am glad I shall never be young without wild country to be young in.

Katmai’s Mount Dumpling, August 2004!

– by Gerry Roach

Rising to 2,440 feet, mighty Mount Dumpling provides a nice hike above the campground at Brooks Camp. The upper part of the hike is across open tundra and provides unobstructed views of the surrounding lakes and mountains. There is a trail through the trees and up part of the tundra.

An old glacial moraine stretches across the large lake. The once continuous moraine separated two lakes, but when it finally succumbed to the elements, it expanded Lake Naknek.
