Nearing Sanford’s summit we paused to photograph an indelible sight.
Squinting to the west-northwest we could just see the top of Denali over 210 miles away!
Pulling up onto the rounded summit, we gazed in the opposite direction at Blackburn, Bona,
and beyond, far beyond, we could just see the famous shapes of Logan and Saint Elias
185 miles distant. In one moment, we grasped the entire scope of the range, while
over 400 miles of North America’s greatest mountains embraced us.

Sanford anchors the west end of the Wrangell Mountains in Alaska. The Wrangells are a western extension
of the vast Wrangell Saint Elias Range, which extends east into Canada.
Sanford is the sixth highest peak in the United States and the thirteenth highest peak in North
America.
