Colorado’s Eagle’s Nest Wilderness Summits

Before the 1930s, no more than a handful of Gore peaks even had names. In 1932,
Carl Erickson and Edmund Cooper initiated the system of lettering the peaks,
starting with those rimming the Black Creek basin. Thus, Eagles Nest, the most
northerly of the major summits, was “A,” and Mount Powell, next in line, was “B.”
These two already had other well-established names, ... but from “P” to “T,”
the peaks bore no other names. ... The lettering system has become a tradition
which some Gore enthusiasts are reluctant to give up.

All the peaks on this list are in or on the boundary of the Eagles Nest Wilderness.
Congress designated the Eagles Nest Wilderness in 1978. Much heated contoversy preceeded the designation. The City of Denver wanted the area’s water, and timber industries wanted to destroy the surrounding spruce forest. These interests did not prevail.
The Eagles Nest Wilderness has 132,906 acres, which are managed by the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest and the White River National Forest.
The summit of mighty “Peak G” is not where the map indicates it to be. The true summit is 200 yards northwest of the map point that extrpolates to 13,260 feet. The difference is only a few feet, but multiple parties have verified the result with hand levels. The true summit is at the map point that extrapolates to 13,220 feet. Either Point 13,220 is missing a contour or Point 13,260 has an extra contour. It is more likely that Point 13,220 is missing a contour, and we have seen this type of map error elsewhere. If Point 13,220 is missing a contour, then it would extrapolate to 13,260 feet, so we continue to use this elevation for “Peak G.” The traverse between the two summits is rough and requires some Class 3 scrambling.
“Corner Peak” has eastern and western summits 0.07 mile (124 yards) apart. Gerry handleveled between the two summits and found that the eastern summit is higher by about three feet. The traverse between the two summits is a Class 2+ scamper.
There is a map error at the summit of 12,945-foot “Pink Pk”. The map shows two small summits, the eastern with a given elevation of 12,945 feet and the western with an additional contour giving it an extrapolated elevation of 12,980 feet, which would give this peak a hard rank. However, Gerry handleveled between the two summits and found that the western summmit is about 10 feet lower than the eastern summit. Thus, the extra contour on the western summit is spurious, and this peak only has a soft rank.
