Notes by Gerry Roach

  1. Our climbs in Colorado’s Indian Peaks region
Gerry Roach’s totals: 124 ascents; 35/35 hard ranked; 3/3 soft ranked; 54/55 overall
Jennifer Roach’s totals: 93 ascents; 33/35 hard ranked; 2/3 soft ranked; 44/55 overall
Gerry and Jennifer’s combined total as of 3/17/08: 217 ascents

  2. There are 109 summits on this list, of which 57 are hard ranked and 4 are soft ranked.

  3. This list’s scope is all summits above 10,000 feet elevation in the greater Indian Peaks Wilderness region. The list’s area is bounded by the northern Indian Peaks Wilderness boundary and the 10,000-foot contour line to the east, south and west of the wilderness. I have listed three peaks that are just out of this area. Mount Adams is just north of the wilderness, but is commonly climbed from the Roaring Fork in the wilderness, so I include it on this list. Two peaks, “Strawberry Pk” and “Granby Pk,” have connecting saddles that are below 10,000 feet, but they are ranked summits with parents in the list area, so I include them for completeness. I do not include peaks west of Berthoud Pass.

  4. Roger Toll, superintendent of Rocky Mountain National Park from 1921 to 1929, tried to no avail to get the Indian Peaks annexed to the Park. Congress first introduced bills in 1971 for the Indian Peaks to become a wilderness area. Congress finally designated the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area in 1978.

  5. This wilderness area covers nearly 75,000 acres, following the Continental Divide for nearly 16 miles in Colorado's Front Range, with the Rocky Mountain National Park as its northern border. The IPWA includes 7 peaks over 13,000 feet in elevation and the highest point is 13,502-foot North Arapaho Peak. A portion of the area, encompassing the headwaters of North Boulder Creek, is closed to the public as it is the City of Boulder watershed.

  6. You can get camping permits from the USFS District Office at 2140 Yarmouth Ave Boulder, CO 80301 (303) 541-2500, or at the Sulphur Ranger District, US Forest Service, 62429 US Highway 40, Granby, CO 80446. “Last Chance” permits are available at Coast to Coast Hardware in Nederland, Colorado.
