Finding the occasional straw of truth awash in a great ocean of confusion and bamboozle requires intelligence, vigilance, dedication, and courage, without which we risk becoming
a nation of suckers, up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along.
– Carl Sagan

Notes by Gerry Roach

  1. Our Vasquez Mountains climbs above 11,000 feet
Gerry Roach’s totals: 19 ascents; 11/12 hard ranked; 4/4 soft ranked; 18/20 overall
Jennifer Roach’s totals: 31 ascents; 10/12 hard ranked; 1/4 soft ranked; 14/20 overall
Gerry and Jennifer’s combined total as of 11/8/09: 50 ascents

  2. There are 20 summits on this list, of which 12 are hard ranked and 4 are soft ranked.

  3. Only summits above 11,000 feet are included on this list.

  4. This list’s scope is west of U.S. 40 near Berthoud Pass, south of the Colorado River near Hot Sulphur Springs, north of Woods Creek east of the Continental Divide, and north of the Williams Fork west of the Continental Divide.

  5. All of the peaks on this list are in Colorado’s Front Range, and Vasquez Mountains Sub Range, a fact denoted by the abbreviation VM in the Rg column.

  6. The Land Column gives the land use designation. The abbreviations used are
    • BP - peak is in the Byers Peak Wilderness Area
    • VP - peak is in the Vasquez Peak Wilderness Area
    • HM - peak is on the Henderson Mine property
    • AR - peak is in the Arapaho National Forest and none of the above areas

  7. Gerry handleveled between the two summits of “Rad Peak” and determined that the highest is the southern summit with the given elevation of 12,317 feet.

  8. Mining operations have removed the upper 200 feet of Red Mountain. Coordinates were taken from the highest ground on 6-17-07. They gave a 12,100-foot summit elevation via interpolation, and this is consistent with an elevation reading from a GPS.
