The first part of the traverse was easy, then the top narrowed into an edge with only three steep feet of rock to the right, below which was air. To the left were six feet of rock, then air. The only place that was not air, was precisely where I placed my hands and feet, and for my disoriented brain, I might as well have been walking on air. Turning sideways, I put my hands on the edge and sidestepped along on the wider left side. Midway across this traverse, the enormity of my position hit me like a windmill. Instinctively I looked up for a handhold, but unlike on a mountain, which always rises above you, there was only air above me here. Then my brain played another trick on me–my tingling feet told me that there was air below me as well. I had never felt like this on a mountain–trapped in midair without wings. As a trickle of sweat wound down the back of my neck, I froze.
